Sixteen-month prison sentence for criminal conviction under HIPAA

In the nation's first ever criminal conviction under HIPAA, a former employee of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance was sentenced to 16 months in prison, three years supervised release, and more than $9,000 in restitution for wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information for economic gain. The former employee used the identity of a cancer patient to obtain four credit cards in the patient's name, which he used to purchase video games, apparel, jewelry, porcelain figurines, groceries, and gasoline.  (Select News, 15 Nov 2004)
