House panel eyes FMLA expansion, sick leave mandate

Lawmakers and witnesses at a House subcommittee hearing said legislation is needed to expand the Family and Medical Leave Act and require employers to provide paid sick leave. Subcommittee chair Lynn Woolsey, D-CA, said the US needs to "catch up to the rest of the world" regarding workplace leave policies. Some Republicans cautioned that the cost of new workplace mandates would reduce jobs. Woolsey and other House and Senate Democrats are expected to soon propose such legislation, which among other things would expand the FMLA to cover more employees, employers, and types of leave.  (Select News, 9 Mar 2009)
