Employee Free Choice Act introduced; Senate hurdles await

Highly anticipated legislation to make union organizing easier was introduced March 10 by House and Senate lawmakers. The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) would let workers opt for union representation simply by signing authorization cards, rather than through secret ballot elections, and would allow government arbitrators to set contract terms if a union and employer can't reach agreement within 120 days. Backed by President Obama and enough House members to pass it, EFCA faces fierce resistance from Senate Republicans and business groups, and potential opposition from moderate Democrats.  (Select News, 11 Mar 2009)
