Perspective: The uninsured employee -- a key issue for health reform

Making health care accessible to the uninsured underlies current health reform efforts. While insuring the unemployed gets the most focus, many employees also lack coverage -- for example, because their employers do not offer health benefits or the cost or eligibility requirements for coverage are too steep. As the recession forces more employers to look at cutting benefits or jobs, the ranks of uninsured employees may grow. This Perspective illustrates how employer-sponsored programs are adding to the uninsured population and poses issues for policymakers to consider in tackling this problem.  (Perspective, 12 Mar 2009, 8 pages)
