Congress sharpens focus on retirement policy

Lawmakers gathered at recent congressional hearings to assess the state of Americans' retirement security and what policy changes might improve it. In the first of a likely series of hearings, the House Education and Labor Committee considered potential changes to 401(k) plans and the defined contribution system as it develops retirement reform legislation. In addition, a Senate panel examined the troubled economy's effect on workers nearing retirement, while the House Small Business Committee considered the challenges small employers face in sponsoring retirement plans.  (Select News, 16 Mar 2009)
