Senate Finance Committee holds roundtable on increasing access to health care coverage

Lawmakers and expert witnesses debated a wide range of reform issues on expanding health care coverage with major implications for employer plans at a May 5 Senate Finance Committee "roundtable" hearing. Much of the discussion focused on proposals to create a public, government-run plan to compete with private insurers as part of a national health care overhaul. The idea is backed by President Obama and key Democrats but staunchly opposed by employer and insurance groups. The hearing was the second in a series of three designed to help the committee draft a bill for consideration in mid-June.  (Select News, 7 May 2009)
